Care & Display Guide

A great diecast collection deserves to be displayed and preserved properly. Whether you collect 1/64 miniatures or commanding 1/18 flagship models, the way you store and display your pieces has a direct impact on their longevity, appearance, and long-term value. Here's everything you need to know.

Display Basics

The single most important rule for displaying diecast models is simple: keep them out of direct sunlight. UV exposure causes paint to fade, plastics to yellow, and decals to deteriorate — often irreversibly. Position your display away from windows, or use UV-filtering glass if natural light is unavoidable.

Display cases are the gold standard for 1/18 and larger models — they protect from dust while keeping the model fully visible
Acrylic display cases are lighter and less expensive than glass; look for UV-resistant acrylic for maximum protection
Open shelving works well for 1/64 collections but requires more frequent dusting
Lighting can dramatically improve a display — LED strip lights or spotlights add depth without generating the heat of halogen bulbs

Avoiding Damage

Diecast models are more robust than they look, but a few precautions go a long way:

Avoid high humidity — moisture can cause metal parts to oxidise and chrome to bubble over time. Keep your display area dry and well-ventilated
Avoid temperature extremes — significant heat or cold can cause plastic parts to warp or adhesives to fail
Handle with care — always pick up models from the base or chassis, not by fragile aero parts, mirrors, or aerials
Keep models level — storing models at an angle can cause suspension to sag on detailed 1/18 pieces over time

Cleaning Your Models

Dust is the enemy of a clean display. Here's how to keep your collection looking showroom-fresh:

Soft brush — a clean, soft-bristled paintbrush or makeup brush is ideal for removing dust from recessed areas without scratching
Compressed air — a can of compressed air (held at a safe distance) is excellent for clearing dust from grilles, wheel arches, and interior details
Microfibre cloth — lightly dampen a microfibre cloth to wipe down smooth body panels; never use paper towels, which can scratch
Avoid harsh chemicals — never use household cleaners, solvents, or abrasive products on diecast models. Plain water or a dedicated model cleaning solution is all you need

Storing Models Long-Term

If you're storing models rather than displaying them, original manufacturer's boxes are ideal — they're designed to protect the model and keep it in collector condition. A few additional tips:

Store boxes upright or flat as the manufacturer intended — never stack heavy boxes on top of delicate models
Keep stored models in a cool, dry, dark environment
Check stored models periodically for any signs of moisture damage or pest activity
If the original box is damaged, acid-free tissue and a rigid storage box are good alternatives

Scale-Specific Tips

1/18 Models

At this scale, individual display cases are highly recommended. The detail level on 1/18 models — opening doors, detailed interiors, and fine chrome work — rewards close inspection and deserves proper protection. Dust accumulates quickly on exposed interior surfaces.

1/64 Models

1/64 collections are often displayed in bulk on shelving or in dedicated display cases designed for small-scale models. Clear acrylic risers and tiered shelving help maximise visibility across larger collections.

Resin Models

GT Spirit, Kyosho, and other resin models have exceptional surface detail but can be more susceptible to chipping than diecast if dropped. Handle with extra care and always keep in display cases when possible.

Model Kits

Built model kits benefit from a clear protective coat applied after completion to preserve paint and decals. Display away from direct light and handle minimally once complete.
